It’s a new year! Cheers to taking on new exciting endeavors and challenges. It’s also a time during which many of us are thinking about taking on projects like building a home or remodeling the kitchen or a bathroom. I was recently asked by Style Magazine to write about a few design trends that I see for the new year of 2016. Of course, I am happy to share these trends with homeowners, and I am honored to be included in the spread among other local designers in our community. Since not all of the trends have been included in the publication, I would like to share my full list with you here on my Haven Studio’s blog. Metal roofs have become so popular that they made it from the mountains all the way down to the beaches. Especially standing seam metal roofs are extremely popular in custom remodels and new construction. They are also less expensive than tile.
ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) construction technology is gaining more and more interest among homeowners due to its structural strength, longevity, energy efficiency, and cost effectiveness. ICF can achieve very long open spans which allows open concept spaces at a scale that would not be possible with regular stick frame construction. It can be used in new construction as well as additions.

As an alternative to traditional horizontal lap siding, board & batten offers a fresh update to your home’s exterior. If concerned with wood siding, choose board & batten made from concrete fiber boards instead – it looks practically the same but comes with low maintenance requirements. It also looks great inside. See my blog post on a home with lots of inspiring examples of batten & batten on both the exterior and interior.
We see more natural/organic materials and textures enter the homes of today. In recent years, homeowners have shown an increased interest in integrating outdoor areas and landscapes into their interiors through lots of light and views that large windows offer. Now, we also use more of nature’s materials on the interior itself. One major example is flooring: we’re moving away from shiny aluminum-oxide finish floors and replace them with engineered hardwood that features a matte oiled finish that is more natural.
High Contrast Elements is a favorite of mine, probably because I like soothing color schemes and a splash of dark wood and blacks will give a room the drama it deserves. It can also ground the space. One example of high contrast and dark architectural elements is the use of black or almost black windows. Steel windows are the most stylish but also most expensive option, where fiberglass or aluminum-clad windows offer a high quality alternative to steel.
Soothing color palettes with an emphasis on simplicity. Especially neutral off-whites combined with soft sage or olive greens are a top choice! The necessary interest can be achieved with contrasting materials and colors.
Tiles with interesting patterns, such as encaustic cement tiles or painted terracotta tiles are enjoying lots of popularity. Powder rooms are a perfect location to be more daring with patterns and colors and it makes it all the more memorable for your guests.
(Almost) white kitchen cabinets have been very popular for a couple of years now and are definitely here to stay. They feel bright and airy, are easy to match to many different countertops, tiles, and finishes, and fit well within just about any color palette you might have in your home. An off-white is a better choice as it feels softer than just plain white.
Instead of the work triangle, it becomes more and more common to utilize work zones in today’s kitchens. If you like to entertain, you know how important it is to give your guests a place to hang out and perch while you’re preparing food. It’s even better when there’s extra work space for them to help.
Steam ovens are a new favorite in today’s kitchens of cooking enthusiasts. It might be the most versatile appliance you’ll ever have in your kitchen.
