Have you noticed that farmhouse kitchens have been gaining a lot of popularity recently in the interior design world? This style blends comfort and simplicity with a touch of rustic charm. The goal is to create spaces that are both functional and visually appealing. Whether you’re designing a new home or renovating an existing home, achieving the perfect farmhouse interior requires careful attention to detail and a blend of classic and modern elements.

At our Sacramento-based interior design studio, we specialize in crafting beautiful kitchens that capture the essence of this beloved style. We wanted to take the time to discuss some key elements and tips to help you achieve your dream farmhouse kitchen, from English kitchens to more modern farmhouses.

Please connect with us if you’re interested in our interior design services. A 15min talk is the first step to determine how we can help you with your project needs. We work on home remodels and new builds alike – always bringing a sense of place and belonging to every interior design project. One of our projects that fits the modern farmhouse style the most is one of our Granite Bay home remodels. Please see our project pictures here. It was featured in the Sacramento Home Magazine, which is not distributed anymore unfortunately.

Freestanding Antique Glass Cabinet: A Timeless Addition to Your Home

A freestanding antique glass cabinet is a stunning and versatile piece of furniture that can add a touch of history to any room in your home. These cabinets are not only functional, offering valuable storage and display space but they also serve as beautiful statement pieces that can elevate your kitchen design.

Functional Storage

Beyond their beauty, these cabinets are highly functional. They offer ample storage space for items you wish to keep organized and easily accessible. Adjustable shelves allow for customization based on the size and number of items you need to store. Some antique glass cabinets also feature drawers or additional compartments, providing even more storage solutions.

Investment in Quality

Antique furniture is often built with superior craftsmanship and materials compared to many modern pieces. Investing in a freestanding antique glass cabinet means you are obtaining a piece of history that is likely to stand the test of time. Its long lasting and timeless style make it a valuable addition to your home.

Enhancing Your Interior

A freestanding antique glass cabinet can smoothly integrate into various interior design styles, from traditional to eclectic. It can serve as a focal point in a room, drawing attention and admiration from guests. By carefully selecting the items to display within, you can personalize the cabinet to reflect your tastes and interests, making it a unique and meaningful part of your home decor.

Design an Elevated Farmhouse Kitchen

Like no other, Ursino Interiors creates natural, warm, inspired interiors balancing the traditional and contemporary. For that reason, this kitchen just had to become part of this blog post for that very reason: to show that an interior designer or yourself as a homeowner can create a farmhouse kitchen that’s far from the cliche of the rustic kitchen that only belongs in the country side. We want to show that you can create a sophisticated country kitchen that combines both traditional and modern kitchen elements.

warm and inviting kitchen design with white subway tile; a modern take on a farmhouse inspired kitchen

Above and below pictures feature a stunning kitchen design that utilizes heavily veined marble countertops and backsplashes paired with classic white subway tiles and elegant white oak cabinets. This modern rustic interior is perfect for homes – remodels and new builds a like – that seamlessly blend contemporary elements with a touch of timeless charm.

Especially those integrated custom cabinets with a tiled surround and glass shelving are a beautiful interior design solution that balance the need for storage and aesthetic goals. Depending on space, you can adjust the depth of those cabinets to create more versatile storage and increase capacity. You can also adjust the height of the solid section to gain more hidden storage space for the not so pretty things.

Rustic and Natural Materials

Using materials like wood, stone, and brick to create a natural, earthy feel..

Farmhouse interior design is celebrated for its warm, inviting, and rustic charm. Achieving this aesthetic requires careful selection of materials that reflect the simplicity and beauty of country living. Reclaimed wood is a cornerstone of farmhouse design, bringing a sense of history and warmth with its weathered texture and unique imperfections, making it ideal for flooring, ceiling beams, accent walls, or furniture.

Natural stone, such as limestone, slate, or fieldstone, is perfect for fireplace surrounds, flooring, or accent walls, adding a rugged, earthy element. Shiplap, a horizontal wooden board cladding, creates a clean yet rustic look for walls and ceilings, while exposed brick walls or accents contribute a cozy, lived-in feel. Incorporating metal elements like wrought iron, galvanized steel, or brushed nickel in light fixtures, hardware, and furniture adds an industrial touch that complements the rustic elements.

Natural fabrics like cotton and linen for upholstery, curtains, and throw pillows enhance comfort and warmth, while leather furniture, such as sofas and chairs, adds sophistication with a rustic vibe.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles, particularly with matte finishes and neutral colors, are ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, while patterned tiles add vintage charm. Natural fibers like jute and sisal are perfect for rugs and floor coverings, adding texture and warmth.

Lastly, antique or distressed glass in cabinetry, light fixtures, and decorative accents adds elegance and balances rustic and refined elements. By carefully selecting these materials, you can create a farmhouse interior that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, embodying the warm, inviting atmosphere characteristic of farmhouse design.

Functional Kitchen Design

Focusing on spacious, practical kitchens with large islands, farmhouse sinks, and open shelving…

Designing a kitchen with a focus on spaciousness and practicality can create a welcoming and efficient environment. Key elements such as large islands, farmhouse sinks, and open shelving enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. A large island serves as a versatile centerpiece, providing ample workspace, extra storage, and a casual dining area. Farmhouse sinks, with their deep basins and classic look, add rustic charm while accommodating various kitchen tasks. Open shelving increases the sense of space, keeps essentials within reach, and allows for the display of decorative pieces. Combining these features results in a kitchen that is both functional and inviting, perfect for everyday use and entertaining, while reflecting your personal style.

A Farmhouse Sink with Wall-mounted Faucet

One of my favorite features in a farmhouse kitchen is a large sink with a swinging faucet that’s mounted to the wall. It makes the sink so much bigger and is great for children to help around the kitchen. There’s free space underneath for a stool if you use drapes instead of a cabinet. You can also utilize it as a what I call “flower sink” – the perfect spot to come home from the farmer’s market and get your new flowers water.

free standing kitchen islands

Free-standing kitchen cabinets are an excellent addition to farmhouse interiors, offering flexibility, charm, and practicality. These cabinets can be easily moved and rearranged, allowing for adaptable kitchen layouts that suit your needs. Their unique designs and finishes add rustic appeal and character to the space. Installation is minimal, making them a great choice for those looking to refresh their kitchen without major renovations.

Free-standing cabinets offer customization options, allowing you to mix and match for a personalized look. Moreover, choose natural materials like wood or metal with rustic finishes. To prioritize functionality, opt for units that provide ample storage. Additionally, combining vintage and modern pieces can give a unique design. For instance, use statement pieces like a vintage hutch or a butcher block island as focal points. Moreover, include open shelving for easy access and decorative display. Lastly, add functional accents like hooks, baskets, and labels for better organization.

Examples of free-standing cabinets include repurposed vintage dressers and buffets for storage, industrial metal cabinets for an edgy touch, butcher block islands as prep areas and gathering spots, and freestanding pantries for extensive storage. Overall, free-standing kitchen cabinets bring flexibility, character, and practicality to farmhouse kitchens, making them an ideal choice for creating a beautiful and functional space.

Examples of Free Standing Cabinets in Farmhouse Kitchens

Vintage Dressers and Buffets

Repurpose vintage dressers or buffets as kitchen cabinets. These pieces often have beautiful craftsmanship and provide ample storage space for dishes, linens, and pantry items.

Industrial Metal Cabinets

Metal cabinets with a distressed finish can add an industrial edge to your farmhouse kitchen. Use them for storing heavy-duty cookware and tools, or as a stylish pantry.

Butcher Block Islands

A free-standing island with a butcher block top can serve as both a prep area and a gathering spot. Look for units with built-in storage to maximize functionality.

Freestanding Pantries

Tall, free-standing pantry units can provide extensive storage for food and kitchen supplies. Opt for a design that complements your farmhouse aesthetic, such as a painted wood finish or glass-front doors.

This luminous and expansive kitchen exudes farmhouse charm with its painted white bricks. In a departure from the conventional marble island, an aged farmhouse table takes its place, effortlessly melding with the vintage character of the home.

There are many types of countertops that fit well with farmhouse style, but wood countertops are the most popular. Dark wood is great for hiding scuffs and stains, while light wood makes the space feel bright and airy. If you choose a stone countertop, opt for a neutral tone instead of a bright and dramatic marble.

pot racks are an essential to a farmhouse kitchen

Incorporating a pot rack into your farmhouse kitchen design enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Pot racks provide a practical solution for maximizing storage and keeping your cookware within easy reach, making them ideal for a busy kitchen.

Choose a pot rack crafted from natural materials such as wrought iron or distressed wood to complement the rustic elements commonly found in farmhouse style. Place it above an island or close to the stove for convenience, establishing a focal point that directs the eye upward and introduces vertical interest to the space.

The exposed pots and pans evoke a sense of simplicity and homeliness, contributing to the overall farmhouse vibe. Additionally, pot racks can be fitted with hooks for hanging utensils or decorative items, further enhancing their utility and visual appeal. By incorporating a pot rack, you not only improve your kitchen’s functionality but also reinforce the inviting, lived-in feel that defines farmhouse interiors. Check out one of our previous interior design blog entries “Kitchen Design Trends That Are Here To Stay” for more pot rack inspiration :)

A few items that we love and know will help your home feel cozy

Incorporating Breakfast Nooks in Cozy Cottage Farmhouse Interior Design

Breakfast nooks are a fantastic addition to home renovations, offering charm, functionality, and a personalized touch. They efficiently utilize small spaces, enhance your home’s aesthetic, and create a cozy social hub for family gatherings. To personalize a breakfast nook in a cozy cottage style, choose rustic and vintage furniture, soft textiles in neutral and pastel colors, and charming decorative elements like vintage clocks and botanical prints. Warm, ambient lighting and practical storage solutions like built-in benches add to the inviting atmosphere. Adding personal touches such as family photos and handcrafted items ensures the nook reflects your unique style and becomes a cherished space in your home.

Personalize Your cozy Cottage with colorful Cabinets

Ensure your farmhouse interior reflects your personality by incorporating a diverse palette of colors, textures, and custom cabinetry. While traditional farmhouse design often features a classic combination of white, black, and brass, it doesn’t mean you have to adhere strictly to this color scheme. Instead, infuse your space with hues that resonate with your personal style. Consider adding soft pastels or rich, earthy tones to create a more vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Textures play a crucial role in farmhouse interiors, adding depth and interest to the design. Mix and match materials like distressed wood, metal, and natural fibers to create a layered and tactile experience. For instance, you can pair a reclaimed wood dining table with linen upholstery and a wrought iron pot rack to achieve a balanced and cohesive look.

Choose custom cabinets to personalize your farmhouse kitchen. Tailor them to your storage needs and style. Paint them to match your decor or go for a natural wood look. Add glass doors, open shelves, or unique hardware for a personal touch.

By incorporating these elements, you can create a farmhouse interior that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also a true reflection of your personality and lifestyle. Let’s stand out form the white box home and show some daring color :) Life is so much interesting that.

English countryside mixed with farmhouse

Farmhouse interior design can encompass a variety of styles, such as English countryside, sharing similar elements and style. English countryside interior design radiates timeless elegance and a comforting traditional feel. It blends classic elements with cozy, lived-in charm, crafting spaces that are both sophisticated and welcoming.

Add Modern furniture to Make your farmhouse Kitchen to balance both Traditional and modern Interior Design elements

The Farmhouse style connects deeply with nature. Add fresh flowers, potted plants, and botanical patterns to blend the outdoors with your indoor decor. Enhance the airy feel by welcoming natural light through large windows for a calm and natural vibe in your home.

Integrating modern elements and furniture into a farmhouse kitchen creates a harmonious blend of contemporary functionality and rustic charm. Sleek, modern appliances seamlessly complement the traditional farmhouse aesthetic, providing the latest conveniences while maintaining a timeless look. Furniture choices, such as a large farmhouse table with modern, minimalist chairs, add to the kitchen’s welcoming atmosphere, encouraging gatherings and shared meals.

The use of clean lines and streamlined designs in cabinetry and countertops enhances the kitchen’s efficiency without compromising its cozy feel. Incorporating modern lighting fixtures, such as industrial-style pendant lights, adds a touch of sophistication and highlights key areas within the space.

Modern open shelving with simple, elegant brackets showcases rustic dishware and decor, bridging the gap between old and new. The integration of modern materials, like quartz or concrete countertops, with reclaimed wood accents, ensures durability and style.

Ultimately, a modern take on a farmhouse kitchen balances the best of both worlds, offering a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. By thoughtfully combining contemporary furniture and elements with traditional farmhouse touches, you create a kitchen that feels warm, inviting, and perfectly suited to today’s lifestyle.

By focusing on natural materials, such as wood and stone, and blending them with vintage or antique accents, you can evoke the warmth and simplicity of a traditional farmhouse. The use of open shelving and large, welcoming workspaces not only enhances the kitchen’s usability but also fosters a sense of community and togetherness. Thoughtful lighting choices and a neutral color palette contribute to a bright, airy environment that feels both timeless and inviting. Ultimately, a well-designed farmhouse kitchen becomes the heart of the home, offering a perfect blend of practicality and nostalgic charm. By paying attention to these key elements, you can create a space that reflects the essence of farmhouse living while catering to modern needs.
